Business + Educational Collaboration | Advanced Graphic Design Project
Background | Situation In an effort to bring innovative solutions to enhance the urban environment, I came up with a exterior mural project for The Art Institute of Seattle. I had selected 3 areas of old building facades in South Lake Union that were in the midst of new residential, office and retail construction. The class project was to create computer-generated designs that would add visual interest to each street. 3 class teams competed for a chance to present their mural concept to Vulcan Real Estate for possible funding and execution. This page features the winning team.
As urban areas expand into neighboring industrial areas, mixing residential with commercial/industrial properties becomes a reality. Vulcan Real Estate's Rethink Urban development of the South Lake Union area of Seattle is a prime example.
Objective Transform life-less commercial building facades into attractive visual assets. Create a computer-generated graphic design mural to enhance and entertain Terry Street views - creating a neighborhood icon

The student team's main idea was to blend urban life with elements of nature. Because the concept behind the Rethink Urban project was to create new spaces while creating a sustainable community, they felt the design should capture that character. Imagery that reflected city living and wildlife was sought.
It was important to look closely at the surrounding neighborhood and research its history. The colors, the industry and styles projected in both existing and emerging development were taken into consideration. They found shades of green blue, brown, gray and splashes of orange.
The team incorporated words to communicate their message of an urban/nature balance and give the mural a "voice". Quotes from the book of Tao as well as other inspiring quotes were woven into the visual narrative across the 3 buildings.
