Swedish Medical Center

The healthcare market has seen meteoric growth over the last decade. Hospitals and clinics have been stretched to keep pace with their expanding customer base. New construction and renovation are on-going to meet the requirement for services and generate the need for new environments with a portion designated for art. Swedish Medical is known for its integration of art into their public areas via different mediums. In 2004 it had its own art consultant on staff and a large, involved art committee that had oversight for new purchases. Innovation & Local Relevancy heather lowe DESIGN opened a new world of choices for Swedish with the proposition that custom digital art could offer an affordable alternative and augment the options between mass produced art prints and pricey original works. heather lowe DESIGN was awarded an array of small to large projects from 2004 to 2006. All of the artworks printed were digital reproductions of regional Northwest artists. A series of custom printed wall murals and collages were commissioned by hlD for specific spaces. For the Eastside Specialty facility I applied a multi-faceted approach to bring a sense of place to the non-descript, suburban space. I culled through the Issaquah Historical Society photography archives to select several dozen scenes that evoked the history of the Issaquah area. I also worked with 3 elementary schools to create student artworks that were turned into a digital quilt. The imagery featured regional photography and artworks digitized & mounted instead of framed.
